Why Do We Hate: Lady Gaga

When to comes to pop superstar Lady Gaga who has many fans, dedicated fans to say the least – it’s obvious that she will draw in many haters too. Deep diving into reasons as to why people would ‘hate’ Lady Gaga, this is what I found.

This is Lady Gaga – Trailer

ACT ONE: SHE’S FREAKY

The first thing I can see is that many people don’t like her ‘freaky’ behaviour or her form of style. When I say style, I mean from her fashion, music and shock factor tactics. When you look at the career Lady Gaga has had so far, it’s been filled with shock factor, over the top moments and crazy fashion statements.

However, as someone who has followed her career since 2008. I can say that her tactics of shock have always had a deeper, meaningful understanding. Take the meat dress for example: used as a way to bring light to the US military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” – which prevented service people disclosing their sexual identity. Arriving with many service people at the start of the night, showing the world she stood with them to ensure the message of protest was prevalent.

ACT TWO: HER FASHION

Many people are quick to look in horror at some of Lady Gaga’s fashion statements. Many dup it as costume and many just don’t see the reasoning behind it. There has been many standout fashion moments by Lady Gaga, many have become so iconic that everyone knows them – but not everyone loves them.

However, Lady Gaga has been that fundamental poster that has always bridged the gap between pop music and fashion. Honing in her expertise of elevating her music by pairing some iconic fashion pieces. She is very sought after by many leading world designers for the simple reason of having a fashion/music brand that work well, she has truly mastered the art of fashion & music brand.

ACT THREE: HER SONGS

Ever since her debut in 2008 with The Fame, the world has always had their eyes on the pop icon always wondering – WHAT’S NEXT. With mega hit after mega hit in her debut, leading onto The Fame Monster EP – many people were hooked on this mother monster. As time went on she released her album ‘Born This Way’ which divided her fans, splitting the lgbtq+ fans from her ‘straight’ fans. This is where many people started to think differently about her. Was her support for the lgbtq+ community going to be her downfall?

What you have to take into consideration that before her mega success (and still to this day), Lady Gaga has always stated that she is part of the LGBTQ+ community – a fact that many people and news sites seem to forget about or simply choose to ignore.

Her exploration in the styles and types of genre she releases can also be looked at closely as to why many ‘fans’ would double take and walk away. Many people fell in love with the pop masterpieces she debuted with. So when Lady Gaga started to explore and expand her musical genre, many people took a sour taste. Understandable. However, if you’re truly a fan of an artist – you should encourage and push for them to explore their options to fulfil their creative needs.

Going on to create an over the top, hyped pop masterpiece (ARTPOP) which many people didn’t understand or didn’t want to back. To a ballad type album (Joanne) which was a personal touch and tribute to her family. Into Jazz with the iconic Tony Bennett onto movie soundtracks and into another dance album (CHROMATICA), which due to COVID-19 was ruined, leading to upset fans as Lady Gaga could not give that era everything and more. It’s safe to say that her next album is HIGHLY ANTICIPATED.

ACT FOUR: HER MUSIC VIDEOS

It’s safe to say that as Lady Gaga’s music career has catapulted to extreme fanfare, many people have been left scratching their heads at some of her music video choices. Many have been quick to deem her video choices as ‘DEMONIC’ – ‘SEXUAL’ – ‘WEIRD’. But I think it’s part misunderstanding and part being blind to the artists creative expression.

Taking her music videos into consideration, I can see why many people can think that she’s demonic, sexual and weird. But if you take a moment to search the meaning behind her songs, the lyrics always have a deeper meaning. This means that you need to go into watching something by Lady Gaga with a switched on mindset and be willing to be open to the lyrical meanings.

Okay, fair enough RAH RAH RAH AH AH, won’t have much of a deeper meaning to you as you listen or watch. But ‘No matter gay, straight, or bi’, lesbian, transgender life I’m on the right track, baby, I was born to survive’ will and should open your mindset into the kind of creative director that she is. Taking people’s (and her own) experiences and throwing them into her cauldron of hits is something of a true musical powerhouse. Her visuals have always been highly anticipated due to the crazy, over the top and a little deeper meaning. I challenge you to go watch her music videos and understand the deeper meaning she is portraying to us.

ACT FIVE: HER FANS

Shoutout to the LITTLE MONSTERS!

Looking back at the vast career, Lady Gaga has managed to create one of the biggest fanbase an artist has seen. Building a fanbase is something a lot of artists can easily do, But Lady Gaga managed to create a mega loyal fanbase. At the height of Gaga Frenzy, she was the most followed, most talked about and for sure was the biggest popstar around (arguably still applies). Obviously with a mega fanbase, which rallies behind Lady Gaga – it started to annoy others very much.

It’s like people hate the fact that someone adores an artist so much. If someone is dedicating so much time and social media posts to an artist, let them be. You know, it’s easier to turn a blind eye in todays day and age, rather than be a Karen and complain about things that aren’t even a major issue.

What I’m saying is why allow someone’s admiration and inspiration of an artist – piss you off so much? Relax, be cool, don’t be all like uncool!

IN CONCLUSION

It’s safe to say that it’s always a major thing, hate, when an artist is as big as Lady Gaga. Wether you like her or hate her, there is no denying that she has not only solidified her career as an icon but she has used her platform to inspire, liberate and educate.

That’s something a lot of artists can’t do these days. There seems to be a major disconnect with artists and their fanbase in todays age. I blame TikTok, but that’s a whole other issue.

When it comes to the reasons why people hate Lady Gaga, I don’t believe its that they hate her. I think they are just acting out against her due to their preferences. Their music, fashion and style preference may not be all Gaga and instead use that against the icon to spew hate.

I hope you enjoyed the deep dive into why people ‘hate’ Lady Gaga. But remember even if you do hate her, she is still super successful, so you may as well give in and enjoy the music.
